Speaker Bio
Dr. Judy Neall Epstein has been interested in the study of aging, death and dying since her undergraduate education in Public Health, completed in 1996. After earning her doctorate at NCNM in 2001 and following 10 years of private practice in family medicine, Dr. Epstein decided to revisit her passion for care of the aged and dying. She currently serves as consultant for a national nonprofit dedicated to improving care and expanding choice at the end of life, first as Clinical Director of their End of Life Consultation program and more recently, as National Medical Director. Dr. Epstein also was recently appointed to the Oregon Health Authority’s Palliative Care and Quality of Life Interdisciplinary Advisory Council. She also serves on the Advisory Board for Compassion & Choices Oregon. Dr. Epstein lives in SE Portland with her husband, Victor, and elderly pit bull terrier, Ruby. She enjoys cultivating life-work balance with gardening, yoga and dance, reading and researching, traveling to warm, sunny places, spending time with family including three young grandchildren and, when she is feeling particularly patient with herself, playing a little golf.

Presentation Information
“Life is a terminal condition. Death will come to each of us. Yet, if there is anything Americans wish to avoid discussing, find more threatening to face, and routinely skip making preparations for, it is our own inevitable death.”
(Barbara Roberts, Oregon Governor, 1991-1995).
We live in a society where discomfort about aging, death and dying often prevents meaningful conversation about end of life wishes. This occurs not only within families and with loved ones, but between physicians and their patients.
Dr. Epstein will discuss personal and societal issues which affect discussions about death and dying, medical misconceptions about death and dying, as well as the role of the physician in the patient’s process of coming to terms with dying. This talk will discuss important treatment considerations when working with the geriatric population, and also therapeutic considerations with your seriously ill and dying patients.
In order to provide education you can then share with your patients, we will discuss how to facilitate preparation of advance directives and discuss in detail numerous options for a peaceful death, including the role of palliative care and hospice, stopping life-sustaining treatments, voluntary stopping of eating and drinking, and medical aid in dying.
