July 2014: Kirkman and Creative Compounds

Mark Your Calendar For July 15th: Hangout with Kirkman’s President David Humphrey on Google+

Mary Closson lDirector of Membership & Development, OANP

Few people have more insight about helping individuals with autism than David Humphrey, CEO and president of Kirkman Group, Inc. His company, Kirkman®, was the first and the premier nutritional supplement company for individuals with special dietary and environmental sensitivities.

If you would like to “hangout” with Humphrey, he will be sharing his observations during a Google + Hangout at 11 am PDT July 15, 2014. His presentation is called Autism: The Past, the Present and the Future and it promises to be both informative and inspirational.

Humphrey believes that many individuals with autism have comorbid medical issues. He started the Autism Treatment Network (ATN), now a part of the non-profit Autism Speaks, with a network of 17 sites at some of the U.S. and Canada’s best medical centers, which are dedicated to developing the most effective approach to medical care for children and adolescents affected by autism.

Currently, Humphrey is working to promote the idea that autism and other childhood chronic health conditions that are on the rise may be coming from exposure to toxins in the environment. “This is not just a genetic problem; this is an environmental epidemic,” Humphrey said.

In his own supplement company, he adopted an unprecedented protocol for purity testing that is unmatched in the nutraceutical industry. Kirkman® tests every raw ingredient in every product it manufacturers for more than 950 environmental contaminants (except in lotions, creams and oils). No other nutraceutical company even comes close to this high standard of purity testing, according to Humphrey. “We need to ensure our customers that the supplements they get from us and take on a daily basis are not adding to their health problems,” Humphrey said. He explained that the sources of supplies for raw ingredients for nutraceutical products and pharmaceutical products have shifted to foreign countries. “Nutritional supplement manufacturers can’t be sure if their supplements are safe and pure unless they test them for purity but most manufacturers don’t, at least not to the degree that Kirkman® does,” Humphrey added.

To participate in the Google + Hangout with Humphrey just login to Google + and click over to Kirkman’s Google + Page. You can also watch by visiting Kirkman’s YouTube channel and blog.

Denise Burnham, RPh, has added to her staff on a regular basis ever since she opened the doors of Creative Compounds back in 1998. And now, 16 years later, her daughter, Krista, has come on board fresh from earning her doctor of pharmacy degree from Pacific University.

Creative Compounds now employs 20 staff members in their Wilsonville business park location. The company, a state and nationally certified compounding pharmacy, produces custom-made batches of prescription drugs for customers ranging from individuals, to a growing number of naturopathic doctors, and even for the Veterans Administration.

“I couldn’t be more excited to welcome my daughter to our staff,” the elder Burnham noted. “She’s been working here since she was 16, sometimes as a technician and others as an intern,” she added.

And now, Krista is gaining more experience helping out while she works toward becoming certified by the Oregon Board of Pharmacy. “As soon as I get my license, I’ll start working here as a pharmacist. Then things will get really exciting for me around here,” Krista Burnham said.

“Not only is Krista a valued part of our existing staff, she will play a vital role in our company’s succession plans once I retire,” Denise Burnham said.

“Knowing that Krista will someday lead this company helps me maintain my focus on building it up for the future,” she continued. “I have to make sure it goes well. I’m leaving this as a legacy and I want everything to work out for her.”

In terms of a legacy, Denise Burnham leaves not only the Creative Compounds business, but a tradition as a respected industry advocate. A well-known figure on the national scene, she recently returned from a visit to Washington, D.C. where she met with Oregon representative Kurt Schrader about the needs of compounding pharmacies. She’s also a member of the Oregon State Pharmacists Association, the National Community Pharmacists Association and the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists (IACP). Last year she was elected as a regional representative to the IACP board of directors.

Now that she’ll soon be stepping into the role of a staff pharmacist, Krista appreciates her mother’s accomplishments all the more. “Mom was always out there, striving to be more and to offer more to our customers. For example, we’re the only PCAB accredited pharmacy in Portland. Mom worked hard for that distinction and our customers really value her commitment. When the time comes for me to take the lead, I’ll make it a priority to carry on her legacy.”

April 2013: Emerson Ecologics

Emerson Ecologics Provides Full Spectrum Support to the OANP & Naturopathic Physicians
Mary Closson \ Director of Membership & Development, OANP

We’re pleased to count Emerson Ecologics as a committed partner through its grant support of OANP.

Emerson is one of those rare companies that not only prioritizes it’s own business, but is also committed to helping the businesses of naturopathic doctors and the naturopathic community to thrive. They have tools to make your medicinary more profitable and easier to manage, and offer great grant programs for organizations that support naturopathic medicine.

Customizable Drop-Ship Medicinary:  Emerson has simplified the process of getting products to patients through its innovative eLink™ shipping program.  The special drop-ship program allows doctors to have products shipped directly to their patients. With this structure in place, doctors can manage their practices without investing in a huge medicinary, and they can still receive a commission on purchases made by their patients.

Grant Program: In 2012 Emerson established a grant program to organizations supporting naturopathic doctors. OANP was awarded $5000 last year to support our campaign to expand Medicaid coverage for NDs in Oregon. Without Emerson’s support, we would not have been able to be as visible as we were in our work getting NDs integrated into Coordinated Care Organizations.

PACE: Emerson Ecologics recently announced the creation of the Practitioner Advisory Council for Emerson (PACE).Composed of five members, including two NDs, the goal of the advisory council is to provide Emerson with the input and guidance of influential thought leaders to gain additional practitioner insight, ultimately to ensure that Emerson is at the forefront of the needs of its customers.

These are just a few of the ways that Emerson Ecologics supports the diverse activities of OANP and the naturopathic community. We encourage you to support businesses like Emerson that go the extra mile in making naturopathic medicine thrive.

February 2013: Community Compounding Pharmacy

Community Compounding Pharmacy Finds Success with New Topical Cream Prescriptions
Mary Closson \ Director of Membership & Development, OANP

CCP continues to receive high marks from physicians for their use of organic creams for sensitive patients who require chemical-free formulations. Another reason for their increased popularity is the fact that CCP is "in network” with all major insurance companies and many patients are only billed a small co-pay. Patients also appreciate that prescriptions are sent with free shipping throughout the U.S.

During a recent discussion with Shaun Dyler, ND, LAc., it was easy to sense his enthusiasm for all that’s new with Community Compounding Pharmacy. Dyler, the Physician Consultant for CCP, was excited about the results doctors have been reporting about new formulas CCP has compounded over the past several months.

"We’re getting great feedback from physicians on patient results for a variety of dermatological conditions such as eczema, rosacea, acne and even warts,” Dyler noted.  Even more exciting for Dr. Dyler is CCP’s work with physicians to formulate prescriptions for topical pain relief. "I’m hearing quite a few good reports about how we’re helping our doctors assist their patients in reducing or eliminating their need for narcotics by using our topical pain relief formulas,” Dyler added.

For more information, contact Shaun Dyler, ND, L Ac at 503.314.6302 or

OANP welcomes Community Compounding Pharmacy as one of the newest members of its "Gold Level” Circle of Support. CCP’s sponsorship represents the company’s deep commitment to the advancement of naturopathic medicine.
