How are you currently using your ND?

Bourgeois: I see patients full time at Lake Oswego Health Center. We focus on family medicine with an emphasis on hormones, injection therapies, regenerative medicine and ozone therapies.

How is OANP valuable to you and/or your profession?

Bourgeois: I’ve been most impressed by the work the legislative committee does on behalf of the ND community to help us maintain and gain rights as physicians. I also appreciate having access to CE, especially the pharmaceutical CE they offer every Fall to meet OBNM requirements.

Do you have a favorite patient experience?

Bourgeois: I was working with a patient who had quickly progressing weakness in his legs (diagnosed by his specialists as an idiopathic neurological autoimmune disorder), who could not even walk up his stairs to bed at night. It took months of work, but with a combination of diet changes, Low Dose Naltrexone, ozone and hyperbaric oxygen chamber therapy, the progressing weakness halted. In fact, at our last visit he was regaining strength to walk up his stairs. Definitely one of my best experiences.

Why do you practice naturopathic medicine?

Bourgeois: I love watching dramatic changes in people’s lives. I offer tools and guidance, but they do the real work. Seeing them actually make and maintain health changes is amazing every time. Those moments make the long hours, endless charts and general stress of medicine worthwhile.

Who is/was the most influential person to you on your naturopathic journey?

Bourgeois: Dr. Werner Vosloo, Dr. Deborah McKay and Dr. Bridghid McMonagle. Fantastic physicians.

What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?

Bourgeois: It’s a tie: Building a busy practice and publishing my first book with Dr. Bridghid McMonagle.

Do you have any words of wisdom for recent ND graduates?

Bourgeois: Don’t be scared to reach out to other practitioners for advice and professional relationships. Create your own network of MD’s, DO’s, DC’s, Lac’s and other practitioners you can trust.

What is your definition of “happiness”?

Bourgeois: Learning new things as often as you have the chance, and finding a good home/work balance. I’ve not found that balance AT ALL, but I’m setting it as a goal.

Who is your favorite author?

Bourgeois: Stephen King is amazing.
