How are you currently using your ND?
I recently graduated and I am a 1st year resident at NUNM.

What is unique about your clinic or the way you practice?

My clinical passion is to serve the underserved. I've trained in several clinics that serve this population; Outside In, Central City Concern and Virginia Garcia. Of the 6 tenants of Naturopathic Medicine, my favorite is "Docere", meaning Doctor as Teacher. I am passionate about educating patients.

How is OANP valuable to you?
I have always loved OANP and felt supported by the leadership, even as a student. OANP has helped to point in me the right direction and provide opportunities for networking and learning through the educational events. Many of my professional opportunities have come out of attending OANP events. I currently sit on the board of OANP.

Do you have a favorite patient experience?
When a patient says "Thank you for taking the time to listen to me." - it's incredibly rewarding to know I've been able to help a patient feel heard and included them in the solution.

Why do you practice naturopathic medicine?
I previously worked in ER as a scribe and my experience there showed me how many patients either didn't have primary care or didn't have quality primary care, thus resulting emergency room visits. I grew to understand how vital primary care was to overall health. While attending NUNM, I learned that Oregon NDs could practice as primary care providers, and felt I could make an impact here in Oregon working in primary care for underserved populations.

Who is the most influential person to you on your naturopathic journey?
Melanie Henriksen and Dee Saunders were instrumental in pushing me to be as good as I can be. They challenged me to better my skills and knowledge as far as I can.

Megan Brinson, Sheryl Estlund and Bill Walter showed me how NDs can integrate into the conventional system. And how we can be amazing at serving an underserved demographic

What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?
During school, I was able to hold several leadership positions as the President of the local NMSA chapter and SGA. I was proud of this because I have previously struggled with public speaking and holding public roles. Being involved in this leadership has strengthened my sense of self and enabled me to become a better doctor.

Do you have any words of wisdom for recent ND graduates?
It's important to maintain the "beginners mind" - being open to possibility in terms of diagnosis, treatment, and patient outcome. Celebrate the small victories with patients; drinking more water, eating more vegetables, changing small behaviors, etc. They are just as important as the large victories and far more common.

What would you sing at Karaoke night?

Ha! I wouldn't. If I did, I would need a lot of encouragement.

Who is your favorite author?

Joanne Harris

If you had a warning label, what would yours say?
Warning: Extremely Spicy!
