How are you currently using your ND? What is your primary focus area of practice?
I’m a naturopathic physician in Bend, OR, working at Hawthorn Healing Arts Center.  I am serving patients as their primary care physician, and as their holistic healthcare provider.  My focus areas include pain management, chronic digestive disorders, and treating mental health disorders.

What is unique about your clinic or the way you practice?
As with most Naturopaths, I aim to stimulate the Vis with every patient, and each treatment is personalized to them.  My practice is unique because I have a heavy focus on physical medicine.  Nearly every patient that I see receives Craniosacral therapy, acupuncture, or other forms of physical medicine.  I find that every patient can leave my office feeling significantly better when I utilize Craniosacral therapy with them.

How is OANP valuable to you and your profession?
OANP is valuable to me because it has been a force in the naturopathic medicine profession to expand and grow our profession.  OANP has supported naturopaths to have greater insurance coverage, increased public awareness, expanded scope of practice, and protection of our profession.

Do you have a favorite patient experience?
I have so many favorite patient experiences!  The first that comes to mind is with a six year old girl who had been sick for about three weeks with URI symptoms.  After a 20 minutes craniosacral treatment, she went home, spiked a fever, fell asleep, and woke up completely well.  This is one of many examples of stimulating the Vis to allow someone to recover.

Why do you practice naturopathic medicine?
I practice naturopathic medicine because it is a beautiful and elegant form of medicine.  It is challenging, engaging, and often brings me to my edge of comfort in many different ways.  Most importantly, it HEALS, not just palliates, but actually heals patients from the inside, out.

Who is the most influential person to you on your naturopathic journey?
Hands down, Dr. Steven Sandberg-Lewis has been the most influential person on my naturopathic journey.  I was able to spend a great deal of time with him in my clinical rotations at NUNM.  During that time we saw many different GI cases, and utilized so many methods of treatment.  Dr. SSL really gave me a hefty bag of treatment tools (diets, herbs, physical medicine, nasal specific, homeopathy, and many more).

What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?
Having a busy practice in Bend, OR, and the opportunity to positively impact thousands of people’s lives.

Do you have any words of wisdom for recent ND graduates?
Take care of yourself after just finishing school.  Heal your adrenals.  Develop a vision for how you want your practice to look, and then GO FOR IT!

What is your definition of “happiness”?
Happiness is inner peace and joy.

What would you sing at Karaoke night?
Any song by Led Zeppelin

Who is your favorite author?
Tom Robbins

If you had a warning label, what would yours say?
Warning, this adventure (climbing, backcountry snowboarding, or mountaineering) may be difficult.
