(In Case You Missed It!) Merck Changes Policy Towards NDs Purchasing Vaccines Carrie Baldwin-Sayre | OANP President
Merck has changed its policy prohibiting sales of vaccines to naturopathic doctors, in response to consistent efforts from the OANP, the Oregon Immunization Program, the CNDA and Helfgott Institute.
Thank you to OANP Member Dr. Jennifer Gibbons (our apologies that this was previously attributed to Dr. Jennifer Means) who brought this to OANP's attention and connected us with the Oregon Immunization Program, which also helped educate Merck about the impact that this barrier was having on Oregonians.
Merck's policy has been to prohibit naturopathic doctors from purchasing vaccines direct from Merck - the most cost-effective avenue. Instead, they directed NDs to purchase Merck vaccines from third party distributors, which increased the price of vaccines to higher than what most insurers reimburse, causing many NDs to either not vaccinate or vaccinate at a financial loss.
Recently, Merck had begun prohibiting even third party distributors from selling Merck vaccines to naturopathic doctors, creating a complete barrier to access for patients of NDs seeking vaccines.
After months of dialogue, Merck has now informed its sales staff that they may fill orders placed by naturopathic doctors in the states that authorize NDs to prescribe vaccines. NDs may order vaccines either directly from Merck, or through 3rd party vendors or wholesalers.
